Piper Kerman, author of Orange is the New Black, joined the Ohio Justice & Policy Center and supporters Wednesday evening. The vibrant energy of the three hundred people in attendance was felt throughout the Phoenix in Cincinnati.
Piper called for us to recognize people whose lives have been touched by the justice system “not only for their worst day, but also for their best day and the best things they are capable of going forward.” This call is a big part of what unites the OJPC community and brings us together to make sure basic human rights and dignity are upheld. Piper spoke powerfully for racial justice and how we can safely and substantially reduce the size and racial disparity of the Ohio prison population.
We also work for change because, as Piper said, “thriving communities are safe communities.” OJPC client, one of the first people to have her human trafficking record expunged in Hamilton County’s CHANGE court, shared her story of the struggle to free herself from her traffickers, find a new life, and how a justice system that allowed her to move on helps everyone. Since her expungement, she got the job that her success qualified her for, and she shares her skills with the community to help it and herself thrive.
